Glenn Brown: Piaceri Sconosciuti: Museo Stefano Bardini, Florence
Glenn Brown
Drawing 6 (after Greuze/De Gheyn II), 2017
Indian ink on polyester film, over cardboard
42 x 29.7 cm (16 1/2 x 11 3/4 in)
German 19th century Berliner Leiste frame, lacquered silver. Produced in large quantities in the 19th century and found in Germany and Spain, as well as in the United Kingdom. The silver leaf was usually lacquered yellow to give a golden effect
This is both a portrait of a tree and a landscape of a person, all melded together. I tried to make a drawing which highlighted the delicacy of fine graphic lines. The myth of the 'Green Man' or the spirit of the tree is found throughout history, particularly common in European folklore. As sophisticated humans, we often forget our important ties to nature and its spectacular power.
