Glenn Brown: Come to Dust: Gagosian Gallery, Grosvenor Hill, London
Glenn Brown
Drawing 2 (after Bloemaert) , 2018
Indian ink and acrylic paint on film over panel, frame
50.4 x 62.7 cm (19 7/8 x 24 3/4 in) sheet size
Italian 17th century frame with carved mouldings with broadly carved leaves
I wanted this tree to have a cool, frosty sensation. The rising sun sheds a stark light over the gnarled tree. The drawing is made only using line and no shading. The dark areas are made up of fine horizontal lines - giving the image a hallucinogenic translucency. Vertical lines emanate from the tree branches, fighting the gravitational forces that pull it back to Earth.
