Drawing 19 (after Van Noordt), 2017
India ink and acrylic on film over panel, frame
32.8 x 22.9 cm (12 7/8 x 9 1/8 in)
43.5 × 33.8 × 6.3 cm (17 1/8 × 13 1/4 × 2 1/2 in) framed size
43.5 × 33.8 × 6.3 cm (17 1/8 × 13 1/4 × 2 1/2 in) framed size
Spanish 17th century gilded reverse section moulding frame, possibly made for a low-relief sculpture. This frame has very typically Spanish dark red clay and the original gilding with gilding leaves slightly smaller than the normal
Jan Van Noordt (1623-1681) was a student of Rembrandt, and the drawing this work is based on was almost certainly made in Rembrandt's Amsterdam workshop. It is quite difficult to recognise Van Noordt's drawing - I have distorted and twisted the original figure in a multitude of ways. The female nude is repeated twice - the correct way up and upside down - giving the drawing a confusing, yet entertaining sensation.
