The pair of found 19th Century bronze sculptures that are incorporated into this sculpture were commonly made in Italy and brought back to England by people on the Grand Tour. The original marble of this work,'The Marly Horses', is in the Louvre Museum in Paris and it is these that the bronzes are based on. Many of my sculptures are about the clash of oil paint and bronze. The thick, brightly-coloured and expressive build up of paint is applied with a single brush, hovering somewhere between a painting and a sculpture. The horses have virtually disappeared under the weight of the piled on paint, leaving the bronze figures to fight alone.
